Quotes on Empowerment

We call it infectious impatience. That's his hallmark and we are trying to inculcate it in the entire organization. Infectious impatience. So that things not only get done but get done in double quick time.

----Mukesh Ambani

Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Accordingly a genius is often merely a talented person who has done all of his or her homework.

---Thomas Edison

If a working class Englishman saw a bloke drive past in a Rolls-Royce, he'd say to himself "Come the social revolution and we'll take that away from you, mate". Whereas if his American counterpart saw a bloke drive past in a Cadillac he'd say "One day I'm going to own one of those". To my way of thinking the first attitude is wrong. The latter is right.

---Kerry Packer

We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.

---Oscar Wilde

If you don't have integrity, you have nothing. You can't buy it. You can have all the money in the world, but if you are not a moral and ethical person, you really have nothing.

---Henry Kravis

First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.

---Mahatma Gandhi

Suzanne Black - Dental Case Acceptance

Dear Eagles,

It is 2008!! Can you believe it? This month in our Newsletter we have two great articles for you to use with your teams. One is the next installment of our series on Leadership. I hope you are using these with your team and expanding everyone’s ability to be a Leader from within. If you missed an edition, you can always go to our website www.thecoachingcenter.net to resources and download any back issues.

I have known Susan McGrath since 1995 and she has always been a source of inspiration to me and so many of us. You all may know her as the woman who manages everything at our events. Well - that’s here and she is great at it. She is also the Operations and Events Coordinator for our company. In this issue we have an article from Susan that gives you and your team a structure to improve through out the year. I hope you enjoy it.

Our Newsletter has a new name. The Heart of the Matter. This has always been one of our guiding principles and that is to stick to The Heart of the Matter with our clients, our commitment to walking our talk and our team. We thought it was a more on track name for our newsletter.

Don’t be surprised if the graphics change over the next few months.

Have Great Team Meetings as you kick off 2008!

Suzanne

Suzanne BlackHailey’s 7 Leadership Lessons

Lesson #5: Delegate, Empower, Measure, Inspect What You Expect and Have Specific Outcomes.

As we learned in Leadership Lesson #4, no person is an island. Counting on others is necessary for making your vision a reality.  Hailey’s Leadership Lesson #5 focuses on delegating, empowering, and overseeing progress toward successful outcomes.

The first part of the lesson tackles delegation.  In order to be an effective leader, you must know when to delegate and to whom to delegate.  While you might trust your fourteen-year-old with the lawn mower, you might not trust your nine-year-old with the lawn mower.  However, your nine-year-old might be great in the kitchen and you would trust him to cook dinner – but perhaps not with a complicated recipe.  This metaphor can be used with team members -- each person has her or his individual skills and talents. Understanding and delegating appropriate tasks will improve the likelihood of success.

Susan McGrathAn Idea for your Morning Huddle

Suzan McGrath - Operations Manager

I cannot believe it is almost the end of January 2008 already!  I hope you are having a great Kick off for your year.

Here at The Coaching Center, we strive to walk our talk. As part of that we have a daily, morning huddle to plan and stay in communication.  Given we are mostly a virtual company, our morning huddle is a conference call at 7:45 am Central (most of us), which is also 8:45 am Eastern (Paula, Sue, and Cindy), 6:45 am Mountain (Trish) and of course, our West Coast guy - Eric joins us at 5:45 am.  A different team member leads the call each day, and we follow the YT2 agenda plus we focus on a particular area of our company each day which includes sharing inspirational quotes, sayings, concepts, etc.

For one of my huddle days recently, I shared about a partnership between my alma mater college and their local public schools.  Together they are fostering a community where character is highly valued and intentionally taught.  What caught my eye was the list of the monthly focuses for everyone involved in this program.

How does this apply to us?  As you know, when you focus on a feeling, a thought, and a way of being – it becomes a part of who you are.

My challenge to myself (and you are welcome to join me if you would like) is to focus on each monthly word and think about the questions listed below.  You may want to do one per week instead of each month – the choice is yours to play and the rules are yours to write.

  • January - Commitment - being true to your word
  • February - Honesty - being truthful in what you say and do
  • March -  Cooperation - working together toward a common goal
  • April -  Perseverance - demonstrating persistent determination
  • May -  Self-discipline - training and control of yourself
  • June -  Hospitality - welcoming others in a friendly way
  • July -  Patriotism - showing love for one’s country
  • August -  Patience - waiting calmly
  • September - Respect - treating others with courtesy and honor
  • October -  Responsibility - taking ownership of what you say and do
  • November -  Citizenship - being loyal to your country
  • December -  Compassion/Kindness - caring for others

Here are the questions I want to think about in regards to each monthly word:

ü      What does it mean to me personally?

ü      What does it mean to me when I apply it to others in my life?

ü      How does it affect me … both in me and in others in my life?

ü      Do I want that to change in the future? And if so, how am I going to make that happen?

ü      Am I happy with where I am now in regards to this word/way of being?

ü      Does this make a difference in whom I am and who I am being?

Not only is the college’s partnership making a difference in the local public schools in Missouri, it is still making a difference in me and hopefully you too.  Have fun being who you are meant to be!
